Why breakfast is my favourite meal of the day
Breakfast is undoubtably the best meal of the day.
If you have read my previous post on why to exercise before breakfast, you will know that breakfast is what motivates me to keep on going during a difficult early morning workout session.
Breakfast gives you the fuel you need for the day ahead, and makes up for the hunger established after sleeping for all those hours. If you skip breakfast, you are likely to snack more during the day as it is a long time to wait until lunch.
Personally, I would find it impossible to go for even one day without breakfast. From my experience, not eating in the morning leaves me feeling weak and irritable rather than satisfied and ready for the day ahead.
My typical summer breakfast
My favourite summer concoction was born from entering the kitchen one morning to find out that I had run out of milk. Crisis.
As a huge cereal and muesli fan, this was a problem. After delving through my fridge I realised that I had some natural yogurt- problem solved.
I added the cereal (fruit and fibre is a favourite of mine), sprinkled some muesli and granola on top and mixed in the yogurt. The texture was thicker than usual and, after adding in some chopped up banana and peach, it resembled something very similar to bircher muesli. If you have not yet tried bircher muesli then go to the shop and find some- now. It originates from Switzerland and, apart from being very filling and good for you, it tastes delightful.
Although I still have cereal with milk on occasion, using natural or greek yogurt instead is something that has become part of my daily routine. I find it more filling and satisfying than the alternative.
I like to be as creative as possible with the fruits I add, although it really ends up depending on where I am and which fruits are in season. At home I live near a wonderful fruit store who do the most impressive range of berries so these are common occurrences in my bowl.
Being currently on holiday in France, I have begun adding peaches and plums as they are in season at the moment and, when ripe, make a wonderful addition. I find bananas are always a must. As well as containing high levels of potassium and aiding digestion, they fill you up and energise you, making them a perfect choice post-workout.
One thing I do avoid is fruit juice. I always used to drink this before realising that despite containing the word ‘fruit’, it is not as healthy as it seems. Fruit juices often contain high levels of sugar and are not all that good for you. A glass of water is now my preferred option.
Finally, I am a huge supporter of having green tea with breakfast- you can probably tell this from the name of my blog. I intend to do a post solely on the benefits of drinking green tea so will not delve into this too much but let me just say that apart from being delicious, it also has an enormous amount of health benefits and really is worth checking out.
